Every generation has its kings of comedy, those jesters who brighten our lives and lighten our souls. This month’s Silver Screeners Free Classic Movie Matinee on Sunday, March 26, 1:30 p.m. at the Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County, 201 N. Mulberry Street will present a double feature of two of the best silent pictures—“Sherlock Jr.” starring Buster Keaton and “Safety Last” with Harold Lloyd.
When we think of the comedians of the silent era, most see Chaplin and his beloved tramp. However, Lloyd and Keaton were just as prolific and popular. “Sherlock Jr.” starring Keaton features impressive visual effects as well as thrilling car chases, daring stunts, and sappy romance tied together with humor and charm. Most people remember Harold Lloyd was a man hanging from a clock face. These few seconds of footage comes from the film, “Safety Last.” The film is a warm-hearted romp showing just how far a guy will go to impress a girl.
Film and history buffs Steven Moore and Mickey Shire will host a brief discussion prior to and following both films.
The program is free and open to the public. Popcorn will be provided by Friends of the Library. For more information call the main library at 740-392-BOOK (2665), visit www.knox.net or email [email protected]
