Mount Vernon man charged with more than 50 sex crimes in Coshocton County

COSHOCTON - A Coshocton County grand jury has indicted a Mount Vernon man on more than 50 sex crimes after authorities say he solicited sex from two young girls over the Internet.

Authorities say Scott. A Hughes, 38, whose address is listed as an apartment in the 600 block of Wooster Road, had gone to the Coshocton County Fairgrounds on Nov. 25 to meet a 12-year-old girl from West Lafayette. When he was instead met by law enforcement, he took off in his vehicle before he was stopped and arrested in West Lafayette.

According to the indictment obtained by KnoxPages.com Hughes faces 56 charges of importuning, 12 of which are a a fourth-degree felony and 44 of which are a second-degree felony. He was also indicted on one count of attempted rape, a first-degree felony that carries a maximum 11-year prison sentence, one count of failure to provide his change of address — he's a convicted sex offender — a fourth-degree felony, and one count of failure to comply, a third-degree felony that carries a maximum three year prison sentence.

Investigators told the Coshocton County Tribune that Hughes went online to prey on two female victims living in Coshocton County on five separate dates this year. Each charge of importuning refers to an instance where Hughes requested a sexual act from the girl, often multiple times within the same conversation, the paper reported.

According the first 12 counts on his indictment, Hughes attempted to solicit sexual conduct online from a 15-year-old girl on Nov. 14. The next 24 counts accuse Hughes of using a computer on Sept. 18 and Oct. 26 to solicit sex from a 12-year-old girl.

The remaining 18 importuning charges refer to Hughes' alleged attempt on Nov. 24 and 25 to solicit sex over the Internet from a member of law enforcement posing as a 12-year-old girl.

Hughes remains in the Coshocton County jail.
