MOUNT VERNON — The West High/Sandusky Street intersection is slated to reopen on Friday, right on schedule and within budget. “Overall, the project has been a good success,” City Engineer Brian Ball told council members on Monday. “We've made a lot of changes, but we've stayed within budget.”

Improvements include a dedicated left-turn lane onto West High Street from northbound Sandusky Street, a wider turn radius on all four corners, and a catch basin installed on Sandusky Street between KFC and Little Caesar's Pizza to eliminate water pooling in the street.

Traffic lights will operate on a timer, but no pedestrian buttons, cameras or sensors are available until the city receives the new signal cabinet in June. The delay is due to a backlog on the manufacturer's part.

Ball gave credit to Superintendent Tom Hinkle and his street department crew for their help in bringing the project in on time and within budget. Council members agreed that the rerouting of traffic during the intersection closure was not as troublesome as initially feared and that sales remained good for businesses in the affected area.
