2-year old Utica child dead, mother's boyfriend jailed

UTICA-A news release from the Licking County Sheriff's office says that on Wednesday night at approximately 8:50 p.m. Licking Memorial Hospital notified Licking County Children Services of an unresponsive 2 year old girl that was brought into the emergency room. The child was then airlifted To Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus. Licking County Children Services then contacted the Licking County Sheriff's Office and requested an investigation.

Sheriff's detectives went to the hospital and met the mother of the child, Melissa Swetnam and her live-in boyfriend, Daniel Hall. Detectives interviewed Hall who admitted that he was giving the children a bath when the 2 year old became cranky and started crying. As the baby continued to cry, Daniel shook her and then she lost consciousness. Daniel wrapped the child in a towel and took her two doors down to the maternal grandparents. From there, they began driving to the hospital, they stopped at the Newton Township Volunteer Fire Department where the child was taken to the hospital by emergency medical personnel. At the time of the incident, the mother, Melissa Swetnam, was at work.

At approximately 5:30 a.m. Thursday, the Licking County Sheriff's office was notified that the child died as the result of her injuries. Hall was arrested and taken to the Licking County Justice Center without incident. No other children were injured.

A bond hearing was held Thursday afternoon for Hall before Judge David Branstool. Bond was set at $500,000. Hall's next court appearance is set for October 10th.
