The 2013 Knox County Fair is set to begin today and run through next Saturday. Fair board spokesperson Nate Joseph noted that this year's event features two nights of harness racing. Joseph says one reason for the additional racing is that gambling is becoming more popular in Ohio, with the opening of casinos and Knox County is in the middle of that. Another is that harness racing is a long-standing tradition at the fair.
Hundreds of young people exhibit their animals each year at the fair in hopes of being awarded a blue ribbon and then selling them for top dollar at the annual Jr. Fair auction. Corporations and individuals last year bid over $475,000 to support 4-H and FFA youth at the auction.
Grandstand entertainment this year includes a concert by country music star Kellie Pickler Friday evening. Those who are fans of ABC-TV's Dancing with the Stars will remember Pickler won the competition last season. Her concert is free but the Fair doubles their admission price to the fair that day. Tickets are available for up-close seating by calling the fair board office at 397-0484.
No fair would be complete without fair food, rides, games, and merchant displays. This year's event has all of that and more. To see a complete schedule of this year's fair, visit www.KnoxCountyFair.org.
