MOUNT VERNON – Starting Point will host its 23rd Annual WALK, Saturday, October 10th. This annual fund raising event is one of the organization’s primary sources of revenue; Starting Point's entire funding comes from individuals, businesses and churches. The WALK will be held at Starting Point’s 11 Woodlake Trail location.
Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., and the WALK at 10. The goal is 200 sponsored walkers and $50,000 in pledges.
A family friendly day of fun is planned with corn hole, disk golf and more for all to enjoy. Event sponsors and their in-kind donations have made it possible for the day to also include grilled hot dogs, and ice cream sandwiches. Guided tours of the facility will include the ultrasound and “Baby Sims” that help to demonstrate the hazards of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Shaken Baby Syndrome and drug use during pregnancy.
Due to the generosity of our community and fund raisers like the WALK, all services to clients of Starting Point are provided at no cost to them by caring staff and trained volunteers and are completely confidential. Pregnancy tests and verifications, ultrasounds, and “Earn While You Learn” parenting classes are among services offered. Approximately 350-400 individuals are served each year by Starting Point.
“The Walk helps raise the funds needed to continue providing our services in the community and offer women and men the non-judgmental support they need at a critical time in their life,” said Executive Director Kassandra Baker. “Our message is one of hope as we educate and empower women and men looking for information and answers related to healthy sexuality and relationships, unexpected pregnancies and past abortions.”
