MOUNT VERNON — The community is invited to give blood in honor of two-year-old Paityn Elliott and other children battling cancer at a special blood drive held in her name on Tuesday, Dec. 22, at Mount Vernon First Church of the Nazarene.

Paityn was born on Aug. 24, 2013. Just a few weeks after her first birthday, Paityn was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma, a form of cancer, as a tumor was discovered near her spine. As her body began to fight the tumor, she developed Opsoclonus Myoclonus Syndrome, a rare condition (one in ten million children per year receive this diagnosis) that causes Paityn's immune system to continue to attack itself and her neurological system even though the tumor has been removed. Paityn's treatment has been highly experimental due to the rarity of her condition. She endures daily steroid injections and has multiple IV infusions each month at Nationwide Children's Hospital. Relapse can occur at any time, causing Paityn to lose the ability to walk and talk.

Throughout her treatment so far, Paityn has received more than 11 units of blood, and she may need more. “We continue to fight for Paityn and her recovery as doctors search for a successful treatment,” said Jessica Elliott, Paityn’s mother. The Elliott family has realized that donated blood has helped make Paityn’s treatments possible, and they encourage the community to give in her honor to help other children like her battling cancer.

Blood and platelet donations are needed every day for patients with many serious medical conditions. Accident and burn victims, heart surgery patients, organ transplant patients, and those receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or sickle cell disease may all need blood.

To learn more about blood donation, including information about eligibility to donate, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). If you were deferred from donating in the past, you may be able to donate again.
