MOUNT VERNON - Each season coming into the tournament of Sectionals, Districts, and States it’s always amazing to see the fast swimming. This year being an Olympic year brings a new level of excitement to the sport and based on the results at sectionals it’s going to be a fast year. Our projections in almost every single event we’re blown completely out of the water. With that being said our performance as a team overall was excellent and everyone this season should be very proud with themselves in achieving either seasonal bests, personal bests, or learning something new to take away for a lifetime.

As we move into Districts coming up this weekend at Ohio State University all of our relays will be moving on along with a few individual events as well. Our girls 200 Medley Relay consisting of Mary Helen Lowe, Valerie Stichert, Maggie McCluskey, and Casey Miglin qualified with a 2:01.15 placing 19th overall. While our boys represented by Garrett Rhodeback, Aidan Clarkson, Nicholas Jones, and Marshall Smith with a 1:54.13 placing 26th overall.

Individually Nick Hull qualified to move on with a 5:14.85 in the 500 Freestyle and 25th place overall. Shortly after that our 200 Freestyle Relays girls and boys qualified with the girls placing 25th and the boys 15th. The girls relay was represented by Maggie McCluskey, Casey Miglin, Camille Fitzsimmons, and Danielle Sant went a 1:52.60. The boys relay came in with a 1:36.06 represented by Marshall Smith, Nick Hull, Keith Robinson, and Andrew Parker. Mary Helen Lowe soon followed the relays with her individual event that qualified her in 24th place with a 1:04.16.

To finish up the meet the girls 400 Freestyle Relay placed 22nd overall with a time of 4:05.83 lead off by Maggie McCluskey, Camille Fitzsimmons, Valerie Stichert, and Corinne Eutsey. The boys 400 Freestyle Relay consisting of Marshall Smith, Nick Hull, Keith Robinson, and Andrew Parker challenged for the 14th spot by a hand finish and tight race with an overall 3:30.56.

The relays this weekend were very conservative on our reaction times as in most cases we were not too heavily challenged in getting into districts itself. We didn’t want to risk disqualification over a technicality so we expect going into Districts this coming weekend much faster times and improvements. We had quite a few events that based on a running four year average would have qualified in their individual events. Many were below our projections to qualify but this year the individual events were very fast and very challenging. With that being said we still met and exceeded expectations within our own team while hitting personal goals and represented the best we could.

Ohio High School Swimming tournament is very challenging to advance in and those going into next season will have a better understanding of the importance of continuing to work even harder. Great job everyone and Good Luck this weekend as we prepare for the next level District Championships at Ohio State University February 20th meet starts at 2:30 PM.
