MOUNT VERNON – As a result of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s arrest of Mount Vernon Police Department Detective Matt Dailey, candidate for Mayor of Mount Vernon, Matt Starr, issued the following statement:

“Matt Dailey has been a dear friend of mine for years. I am deeply saddened and hurt by this shocking news,” Starr said. “The growing drug problem in the city of Mount Vernon has been a key issue for me since I declared my candidacy – but now, it is personal.”

“We need a new generation of leadership who will work to promote the rehabilitation of those struggling with addiction, and work to rid our community of those who seek to destroy it. The drug epidemic has – and will continue to be – a priority to me.”

“The arrest this week shows us that no one is immune to the drug epidemic, not even our best and brightest public servants. There is a price to pay for every decision we make – and the cost is passed on to our families, our places of work and education, and to our community. I ask everyone in our community to join together in keeping the Dailey family – and all those affected by the poison of drug use and addiction – in their thoughts and prayers.”

Starr is running for Mayor of Mount Vernon and says he wants to lead the community into a new generation of fresh leadership and prosperity – and see it heal from the wounds created by the ongoing drug problem in Knox County.
