MOUNT VERNON - A sporting goods store under construction on Coshocton Avenue is slated to open early this spring. MC Sports, a Michigan based retailer, is opening the store going up behind Tim Hortons, according to Ed Rix, the company's vice president of marketing. The company identified Mount Vernon as a good market for its business, Rix said, describing the community as active but under-serviced.
"All the research we did on the area suggests an active community in outdoor sports and athletic sports, and an area that is under-serviced," said Rix. "We think it's just a great fit for us."

The site developer, Cambridge Services Company of Hudson, expects the 23,000 square-foot building to be ready for a late March or early April opening, said the company's vice president, Dave Kolar. MC Sports sells a wide variety of sporting apparel and equipment for athletic and outdoor sports, from football and golf to hunting, fishing and kayaking.
The store's presence will be a boon for Mount Vernon and Knox County, Rix said. MC Sports gives back to communities through team sponsorships, fundraising, and through the Children's Miracle Network. The store will employ 15 to 30 people, depending on the season, Rix said.
MC Sports has 75 stores throughout the Midwest, including stores in Marion, Wooster and Zanesville.
