Mount Vernon, Knox County, Ohio

MOUNT VERNON - Amber Myers, 37, was sentenced on Friday to 30 months in prison for child endangering that involved giving heroin to a 16 year old child. The teenager is not her child but was living at her house at the time. According to a published report in the Mount Vernon News, Myers said she was using heroin when the incident occured in November 2012 and has since sought counseling for her drug problem.

This is yet another tragic story about how drugs have devastated the Knox County community. The local man convicted of killing his mother and girlfriend said he was high on a drug known as bath salts when he committed the murders. He is beginning his life prison sentence this month.  The list of those indicted this month by the Knox County Grand Jury includes charges related to heroin, methamphetamine, and cocaine.

The high number of break-ins in Mount Vernon and across the county is blamed on drug addicts trying to steal items to fund thier drug habits.

The effort to get drugs out of our community can't rest only with law enforcement and the courts. Residents who want to do something to try and get heroin and other drugs out of our community are encouraged to attend a town hall meeting described as "a call for action" on Tuesday, April 26 at the Mount Vernon Public Library.

Scheduled speakers/topics are:

  • Superintendent of Mount Vernon City Schools, William Seder-Adverse Childhood Experiences
  • Jeff Williams, Executive Director, Freedom Center-Treatment Options
  • Judge John Thatcher-The Court System and Substance Abuse

A question and answer period will follow the presentations. The event begins at 7 p.m. with refreshments served beginning at 6:30 p.m. This non-partisan town hall is sponsored by the Knox County Democratic Women.
