MOUNT VERNON - City Council members will be asked to waive three readings Monday evening and declare an emergency to pass a piece of legislation to allow a Boy Scout camping event at Ariel Foundation Park. The Scoutfest is already planned for Friday, May 13 through Sunday, May 15 so if council took the customary three readings (which would take three meetings spaced two weeks apart) to consider the idea, the camp out would be history.
Ariel-Foundation Park opened last July 4th and this will be the first time camping would be permitted there. Two weeks ago at Council, another piece of legislation to allow camping by non-profit groups was discussed. At that time some council members expressed several concerns about the camping legislation.
Monday's meeting begins at 7:00 p.m. with a committee meeting followed by the legislative session beginning at 7:30 p.m. in council chambers at City Hall. Meetings are open to the public.
