MOUNT VERNON — Elementary and middle school students are once again helping those in need and fighting hunger in Knox County.

The 2014 Central Knox County Food For The Hungry School Drive has been planned by Psi Iota Xi Sorority while the Greater Knox County Food For The Hungry School Drive is underway with the sponsorship of Delta Kappa Gamma sorority.

The children are demonstrating that you are never too young to make a difference. Each Mount Vernon area classroom has been supplied with collection boxes, and donations may be made from Monday, November 3 – Friday, November 7.

During last year’s Food For The Hungry Drive, Central Knox County elementary and middle school students collected 9,389 non-perishable food items and $6,272.17. This year, the classroom in each Psi Iota Xi participating school that contributes the highest number of food items per student will be treated to a pizza party. Cash donations are welcome. Each $1 donated will be equal to four food items. Checks should be made payable to Food For The Hungry. The winning classroom pizza parties for each of the Central Knox County schools are being sponsored by Domino’s Pizza.

Centerburg, Danville, East Knox, and Fredericktown Elementary Schools will join the Knox Learning Center to collect from Monday, November 3 through Friday, November 7.

During last year’s Food For The Hungry Drive, Greater Knox County students collected 5,064 non-perishable food items and $2,710.06. This year, the classroom in each participating school that contributes the highest number of food items per student will be treated to a pizza party. Cash donations are welcome. Each $1 donated will be equal to four food items. Checks should be made payable to Food For The Hungry. Donations will benefit and be used in each respective area of the county.
