MOUNT VERNON-Mayor Richard Mavis says that acting Mount Vernon Police Chief George Hartz was placed on a three day suspension after a "violation of departmental rules." The suspension is in effect August 19, 20 and 21st. Details of the violation were not released.
While Hartz is out, Sgt. Troy Glazier is the acting chief.
Hartz became the acting chief earlier this summer when Chief Mike Merrillees was placed on administrative leave. That action came a month after an investigation into Merrillee's alleged misconduct was begun by the Ohio Attorney General's office and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation. The allegations stem from a police auction. Police Detective Robert Morgan, was also placed on leave at that time.
Mavis says the Hartz situation is "disappointing because we do hold them (police) to a higher standard." Mavis continued, "We have a weakness and we're trying to responsive to it. The image of the department is tarnished."
